We aim to make cutting edge academic research available to industry at every level
Our objective is to work with the research and training expertise within the Centre, publicising this to generate collaborations for the mutual benefit of:
Industry - to aid development and growth
The Polymer Centre - to generate funding and stimulate new ideas
The Polymer Centre, established in 2001, now draws members from seven departments in three schools at the University of Sheffield. We can draw on the expertise of 41 academic staff, supervising more than 100 research staff and students, representing a research funding in excess of £12M.
FaraPack Polymers was spun-out as an independent company from the University of Sheffield in July 2004, as a joint venture between the Polymer Centre and the Faraday Packaging Partnership. FaraPack has highly trained researchers ready to tackle short to medium term industrial projects on a contract basis.
The Polymer Centre is a part of the Polymer IRC, the largest group of polymer researchers in Europe, and a focal point for UK polymer Science since 1989. The IRC connects to industry through Industrial Club where it provides an essential role in core science and knowledge transfer. Further, the IRC has an established track record in industrial training and conferences.
The main output of the Centre is in trained polymer scientists and engineers. The essential ingredient of this training programme is a vibrant research culture, both in pure and applied disciplins. Research is commonly on a collaborative basis, and often making use of the strong interdisciplinnary links available within the Centre's membership.
Knowledge and technology transfer to established industries is an essential part of our work. Increasingly our links with SUEL at the University are leading to spin out and collaborative commercial ventures to exploit the new technologies being developed by scientists and engineers at the Centre.
