PolymersomesTen research grants, totalling some £16m, to help solve some of the biggest health problems facing the UK have been awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

A Sheffield team led by Dr Giuseppe Battaglia and working closely with companies such as Biocompatibles Ltd, Oxford BioMedica Ltd, GlaxoSmithKline and UCB Pharma, will receive £2.2m to develop polymers as therapeutic delivery agents to target the central nervous system.

Dr Battaglia and co-workers have pioneered the use of polymer vesicles as kinetically stable, controllable delivery agents in gene delivery. The main challenge of this programme will be to carry therapeutic agents across the blood-brain barrier and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier.
