Professor John Ebdon
Professor John Ebdon obtained a BSC Honours degree in Chemistry at the University of Birmingham in 1965, followed by a PhD in polymer chemistry at the same university in 1968, the latter under the supervision of Professor James Robb and Dr Roy Lehrle. He then joined the staff at the University of Lancaster, first as a research fellow, then as a lecturer and senior lecturer, and finally as a Professor of Polymer Chemistry and Director of the Lancaster Polymer Centre. In 2000, he moved to the University of Sheffield with his research group where he was the founding Director of the Sheffield Polymer Centre.
Professor Ebdon retired from full-time academia in 2005 but retains an Emeritus Chair at Sheffield and is also an Honorary Professor at Bolton University and a Visiting Professor at the University of Central Lancashire. Professor Ebdon’s interests and expertise centre around polymer synthesis, chemical modification and characterization; fields in which he has published over 160 papers, two monographs and several book chapters. He currently teaches on several short and postgraduate courses and researches with colleagues at Bolton University and at the University of Southampton on chemical methods for improving the fire performance of polymers used in marine composite structures.
