Advanced materials and manufacturing
Professor Alma Hodzic
Research Director, Advanced Manufacturing Institute
Developing new materials and forming and assembling them into manufactured articles has been central to society’s technological evolution.
Polymer Centre people are involved many different aspects of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing research. Examples range from development and analysis of stimulus responsive materials and nanocomposites to the design, manufacture and testing of commercial composite parts for aerospace.
One of our programmes, Composites at Sheffield, encompasses activities from microscopic characterisation to design, via fundamental understanding of materials behaviour through to manufacture. Research in the Chemistry department creates new materials with potential in wound management, drug delivery, functional coatings and solar power. A team of Mechanical Engineers is pioneering new techniques of layer-by-layer, additive manufacturing of polymer parts.
